September 17, 2019 Regular meeting

Welcome everyone to the new photoclub year!  I hope you had a wonderful summer and have lots to share with us in the coming months.  Thank you to Sigrid once again for making these notes on our first meeting so that I can write this post!

Introductions:  What would you like to learn about in photo club, or who would you like to learn more about?

Heads Up!  Executive meeting will be held in October.  The club is looking for at least 3 new members to join.  Please consider volunteering.

Chris Cook talked about the upcoming fieldtrip to Police Outpost Provincial Park, planned for Saturday September 21.  If you are interested in carpooling, meet at the Gap Outlet Store parking lot at 8:30.

Chris Oates presented a slide show from the summer fieldtrips to an Abandoned Farm, and the Neuroscience wing at the University of Lethbridge.  Thanks Chris for putting the show together, and for all those who submitted pictures.

The theme for this month was Open (Photographer’s Choice).  There were 22 submissions!  Thanks to everyone who submitted.  The pictures were entertaining and beautiful.

Byron Lee presented a “Being There” slide show of his summer trip to Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.  The show was titled:  The Wild West.  Thanks Byron!

Maximo Lange presented an Ed Segment on “Shooting with a Purpose.  Learning from Sebastião Salgado.”

Sebastião is a social photographer and believes in Photography with all your Ideology.  Shoot with a purpose.  Know what you want your photo to look like.  What is the message you want it to tell.

Sebastião’s photographs are always shot in black and white, high contrast, and with grain present in the picture.  He is the opposite of a minimalist.  He includes his subjects within their context.  Big projects have taken him decades to complete.  He has complex topics, and works for a story, not a single picture.

How can we apply this to our photos?  If there is a reason for our image to exist, then it will be that much stronger.  Ask yourself, Why am I taking this photo?  Study your theme or subject, and have a clear idea of what you want to convey.  Design your projects.  Have one in mind.  What do you want it to be?

There is also a documentary about Sebastião called The Salt of the Earth.  You can watch a trailer about it here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDZDV6UUe2A

John & Gayle Krampl did the Secret Assignment for this month.  It was “Things with Air in Them.”  Thank you for all you images and the wonderful slideshow!

The photo club has purchased 2 backdrops and stand that will be available for borrow to all members.  Brani demonstrated how to set up the stand and the backdrops.  If anyone is interested in using these, please contact Brani through the clubs email.  (contact@lethbridgephotoclub.org)
